The Benefits of Foot Massages

Many patients are aware of the benefits of foot massages. These are often performed as foot therapy, which can help the feet to feel better and ease any existing pain. An effective way to begin a foot massage is by gently placing the palms on both sides of the foot, while twisting back and forth. Additionally, having the arches massaged can benefit the bottom of the foot. Flexibility may be increased when the toes are stretched as well. If there is pain in the Achilles tendon region, it may help to focus on massaging that area of the foot. If you would like more information on how foot massages may support general well-being, it is suggested that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist.

Foot therapy is often necessary for those recovering from either foot deformities or foot injuries. If you have concerns regarding therapy, one of our podiatrists of Achilles Foot Clinic. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Most Common Injuries

People who are active or athletes are prone to a variety of injuries. Therefore, it is often important to take part in physical therapy in order to quickly get back on the right track.

What to Do When Injured

Physical Therapy – This specialized treatment will focus on the affected area, speeding up recovery and the overall healing process. It is a proven method that has helped millions of people return from any injury.

During physical therapy you will undergo regimented training to get back into full form. Training is often very difficult, especially at first when the foot feels weak. Physical therapy often involves:

Basic stretching and twisting exercises – getting the feet’s mobility and flexibility up.

Massaging – the therapist will massage the injured area in order to activate the muscles and relax them.

Strengthening Exercises – this allows the muscles in the affected area to regain their full strength, a vital step towards full recovery.

Possible Causes and Symptoms of Heel Spurs

Pain in the heel and surrounding area may be indicative of a heel spur. It is considered to be a bony growth that develops on the heel of the foot. It can grow in length, and extend to the middle of the foot, which may cause severe pain and discomfort. The symptoms that many patients experience typically consist of a sharp pain in the heel after arising in the morning, heat coming from the affected area, and the heel may be extremely tender, which may inhibit walking. This condition can occur as a patient ages, which may also contribute to the soft tissue becoming thinner in the heel. It may happen as a result of an injury that previously occurred to the heel, wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, or it may develop from being overweight. If you are afflicted with a heel spur, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can properly treat this condition.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact one of our podiatrists from Achilles Foot Clinic. Our doctors will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

The Skin May Change In Elderly Feet

As the aging process occurs, the skin on the feet may become dry. This dryness can be a result from a loss of cushioning, and the nails may also be affected. Poor circulation and sores on the feet can be common among the elderly population, which is why it is extremely beneficial to wear shoes that fit correctly. Circulation may be improved by frequently performing gentle stretching exercises throughout the day. Additionally, foot conditions including cracked heels may be prevented by washing and drying the feet thoroughly, followed by using a good moisturizer. Diabetic patients may benefit by checking their feet everyday for any existing cuts, wounds, or bruises. If you would like additional information about how to care for elderly feet, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can provide the proper treatment methods.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Achilles Foot Clinic. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one our office, located in the South of Calgary, Alberta. We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

How Do Ankle Sprains Occur?

A common injury that is known as an ankle sprain can occur as a result of suddenly twisting the ankle. The ligaments in the ankle can become stretched beyond normal limitations, and can happen from participating in sporting activities, or from stepping on uneven pavement. This type of injury often produces severe pain and discomfort, and can inhibit the ability to walk. Additional symptoms can include swelling and bruising surrounding the affected area, and it may be difficult to bend the ankle. After a proper diagnosis is performed, which often consists of having an X-ray taken, the correct treatment can begin. If you have sprained your ankle, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can guide you toward the correct treatment techniques.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Achilles Foot Clinic. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one our office, located in the South of Calgary, Alberta. We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.
